I like the film myself. Full of pastiche. It reminds you of the series almost every 10mins, from helicopter (MI1) to bike chasing (MI2), jumping between rooftops (MI3 and 4) and breaking into aircrafts (MI5). The martial art choreography, filming and editing all make referencing and pay tribute to the directors in the series.
Ethan Hunt is never shown that full of blood in the series. Unwilling to let Luther go, neither to a pass-by French police officer. He is not undead war hero, just someone who never simply gives in.
That's what a marvelous work as well as a respectable actor mean but not just someone said so.
